Yesterday, I watched an F-350 Superduty Long-bed (exactly like the one pictured) make an enthusiastic launch from a stoplight. To his credit, he wasn’t rolling coal. He just spun up the turbos then disappeared. That’s when it hit me. This truck is the automotive equivalent of the Millennium Falcon!

Kinja'd!!!

Ok, so it’s more of a freight puller, but the idea is the same. Big engine, no freight. That led me to this:

Watching these guys embarrassing muscle cars is loads of fun.

One of many reasons trucks are so popular.

Isn't it a sign of a good engine tune when they produce very little smoke?

I never really got why people liked trucks like that so much until I started driving them for work, then I understood.

Truck engines are cool. Big brutish things. Usually not fast, but quick enough, and so much thrust. My favourite is probably the Vortec 8100, but a modern turbo diesel isn’t bad either.

Modern diesels should not smoke at all. Nor should they smell. If they do, something is broken or poorly tuned.

Yes. Lots of smoke is a sign of a bad tune on a street truck, but on pull trucks, they tend to smoke til spooled.

Yes and no. The reason high horsepower diesel tunes produce smoke is that they are dumping more fuel than can be burned into the cylinders. Why waste fuel? Well, they do it to produce more power, the way a diesel works the air and fuel is not evenly mixed when combustion starts. So to help that mixture become more even they dump more fuel than is needed. Basically it’s done to ensure every bit of air is burned. It’s the equivalent of using a firetruck to put out your campfire.

I thought about replacing my little truck with another slightly bigger little truck. I looked at all the options and realized that for the money, it’s hard to justify a little truck when full-size trucks cost the same, but provide so much more.

Then my wife said something about looking at a zippy sedan. That’s when I realized I could have a fast car and haul my kids around. So, I did the logical thing and went about test-driving zippy wagons.

I have to admit that I get a little jealous when I think about the space in a full sized truck. Then I stomp the gas and take a fast turn.

Man, I want one of those 8100s. Everyone is all about the diesels, but I think the gassers deserve more credit than they get. Last year I saw a 2005ish 3500 crew cab dually with 120k miles for sale for $6-7k. I was really tempted, but I really couldn’t afford another vehicle at the time. I still wish I had bought it though.

All depends what you want on it and what you want it to do. Loaded, the full-size will cost WAY more. Mid-range, they’ll be reasonably close. If you’re into off-road, a small truck will suit you better. Same goes for city fleet trucks with dense loads (think auto parts, fire systems, pest control).

But for someone who has no problems with something bigger, full-size trucks just make way more sense. Personally I like a smaller truck.

If I had spent a ton of cash on go-fast goodies I would find it embarrassing to be beaten by something never designed to go fast which weighs twice as much as my car.

It doesn’t help that I used to hang around with guys that wouldn’t let anyone forget such a humiliating defeat.

For a straight up drag car, it’s not. About 3,200 lbs and 400 hp will get you there. For something you drive on the street, it’s going to be a little heavier and you’d care more for driveability. Certainly still do-able though, even coming from the factory these days. But for a 6000lb+ truck, you’re looking at 800 hp to run those times.

Other than a brief interlude driving a wagon after my first truck’s untimely demise, all I drove was small trucks since the day I got my license. That changed two years ago when I bought my WRX for daily duties. My old truck still sits in the driveway and still sees occasional home-improvement related duties.

Kinja'd!!!

In our area, I’m just more comfortable in a small truck. The roads are narrow and don’t have shoulders. I don’t even like driving my wife’s Explorer since it’s so dang wide. Smaller trucks make more sense on our roads. Bigger trucks make more sense in terms of capabilities, provided you need them.

I was looking at 4-wheel drive when I was looking to replace my truck. Instead, I got AWD and decided to keep the old truck. My wife still gives me grief about the “junker” in our driveway.

A friend of mine had a ‘99 F-350 crew cab, long bed, dually, with a Banks Powerpack on it. That sumbitch was would throw you back in the seat and take off like a bat out of hell.

Banks’ stuff doesn’t make black smoke. Black smoke is wasted power. Not to mention the stuff of douche-nozzles.

Wasted fuel, sure, but a non-smoking diesel could be considered wasted power for the air it pumps in. Since diesels are compression ignition, there’s no time for the air and fuel to mix before it ignites, unlike a spark-ignited engine. So in order for a diesel to burn clean, it’s got to have a lot more air pumped into it, or to have the resulting soot filtered out of it, both of which waste power.

We’ve still got a couple 8100's at work. That wallop of n/a torque at any rpm is super addictive. You barely even notice a 7,000lb trailer. I don’t think I’d call them quick (it is still a truck, the one I drove most often is a crew cab long-bed so it’s pretty heavy) but even with a trailer behind they definitely aren’t slow.

Nothing in there refutes what i said. Sure, if you want more power you need more air, but if you are trying to eek out every bit of horsepower out of your current engine you dump fuel in to ensure every bit of air is used. This is why you see high performance diesels (think truck/tractor pulls) that produce huge plumes of smoke. They don’t do it because it looks cool, they do it because it helps

Kinja'd!!!

Having said that though, unless you’re in a competition you’re not going to notice the little bit more power doing this gives you. People who do this on the street are just jack asses who think it looks cool.

Kinja'd!!! BigBlock440 > shop-teacher
08/05/2016 at 13:16

Kinja'd!!!0

Nothing in that article said it’s wasted power, he said it’s wasted fuel. Also, nothing disputed what I said, you have air, and you have fuel. If you have more air then fuel, you’ll have clear exhaust but if you pump in more fuel you’ll make more power. If you pump in more fuel than air, you’ll have exhaust you can see, but you could make more power by pumping in more air. In forced induction applications, adding air uses power. In a turbo application, that power mostly comes from waste, but the increased back pressure increases pumping losses and takes a little bit of energy to spin. You add more air then you need, and you’re just wasting power.

I should add that, yes too much fuel can be bad, but not using all the air in the cylinder leaves power on the table. Part of it is getting the air to ignite at the right time. By dumping in more fuel than needed, more air ignites at the moment you want it too. If it takes too long to ignite all the air you are essentially losing power since the engine can’t use the energy as efficiently.
